In some remote locations, such as in the Frisian Wadden Islands, there are general practitioners and ambulances available but no hospitals. In case of an emergency, people need to be transported to the hospital by helicopter in a quick and safe manner. These specific operations are called HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) and are aimed at facilitating emergency medical assistance by means of helicopter operations, ensuring immediate and rapid transportation.
In the North Sea, ANWB MAA provides the ambulance helicopter service 24/7 between the air base (Leeuwarden) and the Frisian Wadden Islands. These operations are mostly done under VFR, although in bad weather conditions they can navigate under IFR. This possibility does not prevent that in many cases, when the weather is really bad, the helicopter operation is not possible and an alternative means of transportation must be found for the patient.
MovingDot experts have worked together with ANWB-MAA pilots and experts to facilitate PinS procedures between the four Frisian Wadden Islands and their base, Leeuwarden. As a result, two departure procedures (East and West) and one approach procedure with LNAV minima have been designed for each island.
Developing PinS procedures requires coordination between the different stakeholders and the involvement of a broader team to cover all the relevant aspects of these operations.
