Schiphol and partners have started conducting follow-up sustainable taxiing trials. On 6 December 2022, an aircraft taxied from Schiphol-Centre to a platform near the Zwanenburgbaan, without the aircraft engines running. This was made possible by using a TaxiBot, which is a semi-robotic taxiing system. The objective of this way of taxiing is to reduce fuel consumption and therefore CO2, nitrogen and ultrafine particle emissions.
Schiphol is striving for sustainable taxiing at the airport in 2030, together with Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL), KLM, Transavia, Corendon Dutch Airlines, TUIfly and ground handling companies dnata, Swissport, Viggo, KLM Ground Services and TaxiBot provider Smart Airport Systems. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is supporting the initiative. The tests are part of European initiatives within the framework of the ALBATROSS-consortium and its successor: HERON. These subsidy projects aim to make aviation more sustainable.
Earlier this year, Schiphol Airport purchased two TaxiBot-systems. These TaxiBots will be used to gain as much experience as possible on sustainable taxiing operations. MovingDot is hired by Schiphol Airport to manage the operational use of the TaxiBots, as well as to provide administrative support in the sustainable taxiing programme.
