Creating a healthy and safe working environment is a key priority at Schiphol Airport. To achieve this, Schiphol is working with sector partners to reduce aircraft and diesel motor emissions (VDME) and to minimise employee exposure to these emissions.
MovingDot was asked to support two important initiatives contributing to these goals.
Reducing APU and Engine Usage
An evaluation with the five home-based airlines at Schiphol and their ground handlers showed that the initiative to reduce APU and engine usage delivered positive results. It increased insight into the possibilities and limitations of N-1 taxiing and demonstrated that the use of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) during ground handling could be reduced.
Successful measures included:
- Large-scale deployment of electric Pre-Conditioned Air units (PCAs)
- Clearer and stricter operational agreements
- Awareness campaigns for pilots and apron staff
- Improved procedures between Schiphol, airlines and ground handlers
- Higher prioritisation of timely PCA connection by ground handlers
Plan of Approach for Arrival and Departure Procedures
Together with LVNL and KLM, Schiphol also developed a phased plan of approach aimed at reducing employee exposure by 2030. The plan focuses on moving engine start-up activities further away from personnel and reducing congestion around aircraft stands.
It provides a clear roadmap with concrete measures and implementation milestones, while meeting the requirements set by the Netherlands Labour Authority. The next phase, further development and implementation, is already underway.
Our Contribution
MovingDot is proud to support Schiphol in creating a healthier working environment for airside employees while contributing to more sustainable airport operations.
“It was a strong step by Schiphol to bring airlines and ground handlers together to address emissions at the source. By creating dialogue, mutual understanding and practical agreements, the cooperation has already delivered tangible results.” – MARJAN SPRENKELS
“What makes this Plan of Action powerful is that it is both ambitious and realistic, with support from all parties involved. Turning that shared ambition into structured implementation is the next important step.” – RUDY MEGENS
